Canadore College will be hosting a delegation from the prestigious Founder Group today.

(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Canadore College will be hosting a delegation from the prestigious Founder Group today.

Founder Group, a multi-billion dollar corporation out of Beijing, China, has industry groups in academics, information technology, healthcare and finance, and is exploring potential partnerships with Canadore.

This is the Founder’s third visit to North Bay, but this time the delegation is bringing 17 students and a faculty member for a one-month stay in the city. They will take the opportunity to fully experience Canadian academics and culture on their visit.

The group is a part of Canadore College’s overarching cultural exchange program. In 2015-2016 alone, more than 100 domestic and overseas students will take part in exchanges, in addition to the 154 internationals formally studying in North Bay.

“These are wonderful relationship-building opportunities for our college and our community,” said George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College. “North Bay is always so welcoming and accommodating to all of our students and guests. Thank you so much for your warm reception.”

Canadore College was successful in securing a grant from The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to establish a Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary.

(PARRY SOUND, ONT.) -- Canadore College was successful in securing a grant from The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to establish a Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary.

The $7,300 grant from TD was also bolstered by an additional $2,000 contribution from local company, Crofter’s Organic.

In May 2015, a workshop on honeybees, plants and food was hosted at Canadore’s West Parry Sound Campus with the help of the same partners. Based on the remarkable success and the interest taken by the broader community, Campus Manager Dr. Peter Istvan submitted the latest funding proposal to the charity.

“It was easy to take the next steps on this project because we had overwhelming support with our last program,” said Istvan. “The apiary will be a safe and hands-on education resource for the whole community. In addition, it will create ongoing awareness of the importance of pollinators in relationship to environmental changes, plants and food production.”

The Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary will be established in Spring 2016 and will initially consist of four beehives. The funding will be used to purchase the honeybees, hive equipment, honey extraction tools and other beekeeping accessories.

The apiary will enhance beekeeping-related programing and workshops at the campus, as well as serve as an educational resource for primary and secondary school teachers, the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, the Horticultural Society and other groups.

“We are happy to support the apiary because it will be a resource to teach visitors about bees and current bee crisis and provide a hands-on experience,” said Kevin Powless from Crofter’s. “It will also encourage small-scale beekeeping among property-owners, giving them information, demonstrations, contacts for mentors, and a resource to help them”.

Canadore College will assume primary responsibility for the management of the apiary, but will also be assisted by a Parry Sound and Area Apiary Resource Team with membership from local beekeepers, the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association and the Muskoka-Parry Sound Beekeepers' Association.

People who are interested in becoming a beekeeper, or would like to be involved with the initiative, can attend an information session on October 28 from 6 - 7 p.m. It is free to attend, but registration is required – contact 705.746.9222.

Relaunch of Canadore’s Student Radio Station

Canadore College’s student radio station relaunched earlier today after a complete revamp.

(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Canadore College’s student radio station relaunched earlier today after a complete revamp.

The online Panther Radio station, has been ‘on-air’ for nearly 10 years and is run almost entirely by students in the Broadcast – Radio program.

“The students and their faculty felt it was time for a change,” said Yura Monestime, Interim Associate Dean of Media, Design and Dramatic Arts. “Let’s face it, a lot has changed over the past decade. The way audiences consume their media is completely different than even five years ago. What matters to listeners has shifted, and we are evolving to be more relevant.”

Monestime says the refresh includes new audio programming to suit the Canadore student body and a new website platform which is also mobile device friendly. In the works is a new logo inspired by Amanda Wall, a third-year student from Canadore’s Graphic Design program.

Radio students will be responsible for running five different segments with a focus on trending Pop/Hot Adult Contemporary genre music. The move was made after students polled the student body about their listening habits.

The data collected led to changes in the music scheduling to appeal to listeners aged 19-22 and to adapt music to blocks of time that associate with individual and group listening periods, as well as a reduction in the music library from over 3,500 songs to a modest 400-500 popular singles. As the semester moves forward, the radio team will also introduce talk radio segments and special guests.

For the first week, the Panther Radio will be commercial- and announcer-free, with students going live to air on the week of October 12.

Canadore trains people through applied learning, leadership and innovation. It provides access to over 65 full-time quality programs and has outstanding faculty and student services. The College and its students add nearly $290 million to the regions of Nipissing and Parry Sound. (NORTH BAY, ONT.) -- Canadore College officially began construction on the second phase of its Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing (ICAMP) last week.

Plans for ICAMP 2.0 were formally announced in June 2015 in response to strong industry demand. The Centre’s first phase created a unique partnership arrangement focused on business development and expansion, allowing companies to conceptualize, design, prototype and improve or test new products for the commercial marketplace.

The expansion will allow the College to hire additional personnel to support project management and outreach, as well as purchase a 3D metal printer; design simulation software; advanced visualization and productivity tools; and other equipment to supplement current technologies.

Since opening the doors to ICAMP in 2013, more than 100 companies have shown an interest in using ICAMP to develop or refine new products and processes and more than 150 projects have been completed in this time frame. The Centre has also helped industry retain 16 jobs and create an additional 57 in the region’s economy.

The project is slated for completion in Spring 2016.

Work on ICAMP 2.0 is being done by Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture Inc. and M. Sullivan & Son Limited.

Canadore College Students Receive Cutting-Edge Certification

On Tuesday, students in Canadore College’s Electrical Techniques program will receive a new industry certification after training on proprietary Southwire Canada systems.

(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – On Tuesday, students in Canadore College’s Electrical Techniques program will receive a new industry certification after training on proprietary Southwire Canada systems.

Southwire Company, a leader in technology and innovation, is one of North America's largest wire and cable producers. Professors at Canadore College have been set up to certify up to 66 students per year on Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions system.

“The SIMpull Solutions system is quite revolutionary in the field,” said Steven Draves, Program Coordinator for the Electrical Techniques program. “Compared to traditional electrical installations, the system is way more efficient, saving time and money. It’s a great opportunity for our students to gain industry experience in our own Canadore labs.”

Students who finish the training will earn a Southwire SIMpull Solutions certificate of completion, which will give them a leg up on the competition according to Draves.

“Most of our profession falls under the blanket of small business,” said Draves. “Electrical contractors often work for themselves, or for a very small shop. Being experienced in the latest technology can make all of the difference in winning a job bid.”

Slated during the 26th Annual Small Business Week, regional electrical contractors will also have the chance to learn about how the system can benefit and grow their businesses.

The partnership between Canadore College and Southwire Canada is the first of its kind in Canada. This is the third training visit to North Bay for the company, and 50 Canadore students have been trained to date.

Canadore trains people through applied learning, leadership and innovation. It provides access to over 65 full-time quality programs and has outstanding faculty and student services.
